Rillquest

Rillquest brings river field surveys into a visual workspace built around the records, decisions and reviews that shape the work.

Rillquest product concept in a branded setting

Project overview

Rillquest is a product design concept for river field surveys. Field observations lose context when photographs, site identifiers and visit notes are stored separately. The scope connects four activities: catchment map, field notebook, survey itinerary, observation comparison. Each has a dedicated screen, with a watershed map with a vertical field-notebook drawer establishing the visual direction. The work includes interface composition, proposed feature architecture and industry-specific showcase imagery.

The challenge

Field observations lose context when photographs, site identifiers and visit notes are stored separately. A useful workspace must preserve the connection between the original reference, the selected record and the discussion around a change. Showing more information alone would not resolve that handoff.

  • Keep site identifiers and visit records connected to the selected work.
  • Make team assignments visible at the point where decisions are reviewed.
  • Retain offline drafts and observation history through the handoff.

Our solution

The design starts with a watershed map with a vertical field-notebook drawer. Locate fictional survey sites on a watershed illustration and inspect visit notes. The remaining views separate exploration, coordination and review into layouts suited to their content. A slate, aqua and moss palette gives the product its own visual identity, while selected-record panels keep details close to the working surface.

  • Locate fictional survey sites on a watershed illustration and inspect visit notes.
  • Review a dated site entry with photographs, observation fields and attachments.
  • Arrange site visits on a route strip beside a team calendar.
  • Compare two visits through paired photographs and recorded observations.

Key features

  • Catchment map

Locate fictional survey sites on a watershed illustration and inspect visit notes.

  • Field notebook

Review a dated site entry with photographs, observation fields and attachments.

  • Survey itinerary

Arrange site visits on a route strip beside a team calendar.

  • Observation comparison

Compare two visits through paired photographs and recorded observations.

  • Site identifiers

    Identify each observation site consistently.

  • Visit records

Keep dated notes attached to the visit.

  • Photo evidence

    Review photographs alongside field observations.

  • Sample references

Connect collected-sample references with site entries.

  • Team assignments

Assign planned visits to field team members.

  • Route planning

Arrange site stops in a proposed itinerary.

  • Offline drafts

A proposed draft mode retains unfinished field entries.

  • Observation history

    Compare observations from different visits.

Technology stack

    The results

The design establishes four distinct river field surveys views and a proposed set of twelve feature areas. The visual system prioritizes the working object and its context rather than repeated metric cards. A next validation would ask a practitioner to move from catchment map to observation comparison, identify the selected record and retrieve the relevant offline drafts. These are design deliverables, not measured business outcomes.
