Plumetric

Plumetric brings weather observation journals into a visual workspace built around the records, decisions and reviews that shape the work.

Plumetric product concept in a branded setting

Project overview

Plumetric is a product design concept for weather observation journals. Weather hobbyists need to distinguish recorded observations from personal notes while preserving station and time context. The scope connects four activities: station journal, cloud archive, instrument log, monthly study. Each has a dedicated screen, with a panoramic time-series workspace with station selector establishing the visual direction. The work includes interface composition, proposed feature architecture and industry-specific showcase imagery.

The challenge

Weather hobbyists need to distinguish recorded observations from personal notes while preserving station and time context. A useful workspace must preserve the connection between the original reference, the selected record and the discussion around a change. Showing more information alone would not resolve that handoff.

  • Keep station profiles and observation timestamps connected to the selected work.
  • Make maintenance notes visible at the point where decisions are reviewed.
  • Retain photo attachments and data provenance through the handoff.

Our solution

The design starts with a panoramic time-series workspace with station selector. Inspect illustrative weather observations on a timeline with station metadata. The remaining views separate exploration, coordination and review into layouts suited to their content. A cloud gray, ultramarine and sunrise yellow palette gives the product its own visual identity, while selected-record panels keep details close to the working surface.

  • Inspect illustrative weather observations on a timeline with station metadata.
  • Browse cloud photographs by observation date and descriptive tags.
  • Review instrument records with maintenance notes and reference images.
  • Compare illustrative daily observations in a calendar heatmap and notebook.

Key features

  • Station journal

Inspect illustrative weather observations on a timeline with station metadata.

  • Cloud archive

Browse cloud photographs by observation date and descriptive tags.

  • Instrument log

Review instrument records with maintenance notes and reference images.

  • Monthly study

Compare illustrative daily observations in a calendar heatmap and notebook.

  • Station profiles

Keep station context with recorded observations.

  • Observation timestamps

Show when each observation was entered.

  • Cloud tags

Organize cloud photographs by descriptive labels.

  • Instrument records

Document the instruments associated with a station.

  • Maintenance notes

Keep service observations in an instrument log.

  • Calendar review

Review records across a monthly calendar.

  • Photo attachments

Attach images to the relevant observation.

  • Data provenance

Record where an illustrative value came from.

Technology stack

    The results

The design establishes four distinct weather observation journals views and a proposed set of twelve feature areas. The visual system prioritizes the working object and its context rather than repeated metric cards. A next validation would ask a practitioner to move from station journal to monthly study, identify the selected record and retrieve the relevant photo attachments. These are design deliverables, not measured business outcomes.
