Fermentra

Fermentra brings food development journals into a visual workspace built around the records, decisions and reviews that shape the work.

Fermentra product concept in a branded setting

Project overview

Fermentra is a product design concept for food development journals. Development batches are hard to compare when ingredient versions and observation notes become separated. The scope connects four activities: batch notebook, sample shelf, observation timeline, recipe revision. Each has a dedicated screen, with a batch notebook with photographic sample strip and structured observation panels establishing the visual direction. The work includes interface composition, proposed feature architecture and industry-specific showcase imagery.

The challenge

Development batches are hard to compare when ingredient versions and observation notes become separated. A useful workspace must preserve the connection between the original reference, the selected record and the discussion around a change. Showing more information alone would not resolve that handoff.

  • Keep batch identifiers and ingredient references connected to the selected work.
  • Make version comparisons visible at the point where decisions are reviewed.
  • Retain review stages and archive search through the handoff.

Our solution

The design starts with a batch notebook with photographic sample strip and structured observation panels. Inspect an illustrative food-development batch with ingredient references and observation notes. The remaining views separate exploration, coordination and review into layouts suited to their content. A brick red, oat and olive palette gives the product its own visual identity, while selected-record panels keep details close to the working surface.

  • Inspect an illustrative food-development batch with ingredient references and observation notes.
  • Browse labeled sample photographs by batch and review stage.
  • Compare dated batch observations on a visual timeline.
  • Review ingredient-list changes beside tasting notes and version comments.

Key features

  • Batch notebook

Inspect an illustrative food-development batch with ingredient references and observation notes.

  • Sample shelf

Browse labeled sample photographs by batch and review stage.

  • Observation timeline

Compare dated batch observations on a visual timeline.

  • Recipe revision

Review ingredient-list changes beside tasting notes and version comments.

  • Batch identifiers

Distinguish development records with batch references.

  • Ingredient references

Connect a batch with its ingredient-list revision.

  • Sample labels

Identify samples in photographs and notes.

  • Observation dates

Place observations in their recorded sequence.

  • Version comparisons

    Review changes between ingredient lists.

  • Tasting notes

Keep sensory observations beside sample records.

  • Review stages

Group samples by the current review stage.

  • Archive search

A proposed search retrieves older batch notes.

Technology stack

    The results

The design establishes four distinct food development journals views and a proposed set of twelve feature areas. The visual system prioritizes the working object and its context rather than repeated metric cards. A next validation would ask a practitioner to move from batch notebook to recipe revision, identify the selected record and retrieve the relevant review stages. These are design deliverables, not measured business outcomes.
