Cartavox

Cartavox brings map publishing into a visual workspace built around the records, decisions and reviews that shape the work.

Cartavox product concept in a branded setting

Project overview

Cartavox is a product design concept for map publishing. Map publishers need editorial annotations to remain connected to the relevant layer and print version. The scope connects four activities: map studio, symbol library, editorial review, print proof. Each has a dedicated screen, with a large map canvas with layer tree and symbol palette establishing the visual direction. The work includes interface composition, proposed feature architecture and industry-specific showcase imagery.

The challenge

Map publishers need editorial annotations to remain connected to the relevant layer and print version. A useful workspace must preserve the connection between the original reference, the selected record and the discussion around a change. Showing more information alone would not resolve that handoff.

  • Keep layer groups and landmark records connected to the selected work.
  • Make revision comparison visible at the point where decisions are reviewed.
  • Retain legend editor and print checklist through the handoff.

Our solution

The design starts with a large map canvas with layer tree and symbol palette. Inspect a fictional city map with layer controls and a selected landmark inspector. The remaining views separate exploration, coordination and review into layouts suited to their content. A parchment, navy and vermilion palette gives the product its own visual identity, while selected-record panels keep details close to the working surface.

  • Inspect a fictional city map with layer controls and a selected landmark inspector.
  • Browse map symbols, line styles and label treatments in a visual library.
  • Compare map revisions with positioned comments and place-label notes.
  • Review a map sheet with legend, scale illustration and export preparation checklist.

Technology stack

    The results

The design establishes four distinct map publishing views and a proposed set of twelve feature areas. The visual system prioritizes the working object and its context rather than repeated metric cards. A next validation would ask a practitioner to move from map studio to print proof, identify the selected record and retrieve the relevant legend editor. These are design deliverables, not measured business outcomes.
